Everyone would drive by saying "That car sure looks good". But it would be pointless to have a beautiful car of any kind if it couldn't perform the task it was designed for.
Web sites are often like cars with out motors - they looks good, but doesn't perform the task and achieve the goals it was intended for. World-wide, 98% of web designers focus on creating websites that "look good". This is an important part of creating a successful website. However, unless people searching the Internet find your website, will the websites "good looks" really have that much of an influence on your business! The job is not finished. It needs a motor or an engine.Compatibility Mean Everything
With the several different types of search engines that there are, a web site needs to have a number of requirements to be met. A common example of a requirement would be; websites built without frames. If your web site is built in frames chances are your site will not be margined in more than half of all search engines. There are many more requirements every year. Is your web developer meeting those requirements?
If your web site is going to be successful, it will need to be compatible with the search engine. At Doncor.com we know that "Compatibility Means Everything" when it comes to building a web site. So we do it from the ground up. Right from the very beginning of every project, we constantly monitor the entire development.
With sophisticated software that is designed to inform us of compatibility issues, it becomes virtually impossible for search engines to ignore your site. Thus getting your site margined into their database.
What about Target Market?
Jim Cowan (a Christian song writer) wrote, "When it's all been said and done, there is just one thing that matters". The same will always apply to your web site. Will it bring you business? Once you have the traffic, the question is "will you have their business?" More then 98% of the time, the answer to that question is sadly "no". Why? Because the design of the site was made to please the masses instead of the target market, or worse yet the design of the site only ended up pleasing one individual; the owner of the web site.
Our tool will be a profile of a hypothetical yet detailed person. Interaction design expert Alan Cooper was responsible for pioneering the profile concept. 'The Inmates Are Running the Asylum' is Cooper's book and it brings forth a simple yet powerful concept. Make a detailed description of your visitor and what they want to get done. The reason you will have success is because of a "Goal Directed" solution for an individual, instead of a compromise for many.
A good example of a successful profile driven idea would be roll-aboard luggage. If you were to stroll through any airport terminal, you would notice dozens of people toting their luggage behind them on wheels. The luggage industry was overtaken with this new design of a suitcase with wheels and a fold-able handle.
Yet, this type of suitcase was never meant for the average traveller. Commercial airline crews were the first to use the roll-aboard luggage. We all know that airline crews are taught to be precise. This was a problem because normal luggage did not maneuver well through aisles, nor did it stow away any easier. Luggage designers noticed the size of this problem and in turn made rolling luggage. It was thought that if airline crews can use them, than surely the everyday traveler could use them.
In conclusion, a website designed for one serves better than a website designed for many. A website designed for a fictional character (persona) that would represent the target market will generate a higher success rate when the site is designed with usability and convenience in mind.
